L’album inaugural de Winehouse, Frank (2003), fut un succès critique dans son pays le Royaume-Uni et fut nominé pour le Mercury Prize. Le suivant, Back to Black (2006), lui a fait remporté cinq Grammy Awards 2008, égalant alors le record du plus grand nombre de victoires par une artiste féminine en une seule soirée, et a fait d’elle la première femme britannique à avoir mis la main sur cinq Grammys.
Winehouse est morte d’une intoxication alcoolique le 23 juillet 2011, à l’âge de seulement 27 ans et à partir de cette date, elle fait partie du club des 27. Son album Back to Black est devenu à titre posthume, pendant plusieurs mois, l’album ayant eu le plus de ventes au Royaume-Uni depuis le début du nouveau millénaire.
