At New York’s Madison Square Garden on May 17, 1963, Bruno Sammartino defeated “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers by submission to win his first WWWF (now WWE) World Heavyweight Championship. It was the first time the championship had changed hands, and Sammartino was to be the big star of the 1960s in the WWWF, as he would hold the title for almost eight years with a total of 2803 days.
He lost the title to Ivan Koloff on January 18, 1971, regained it against Stan Staziak on December 10, 1973 and lost it one last time to “Superstar” Billy Graham, with a total reign of 1237 days.
