On May 23, 1999, Canadian wrestler Owen Hart died tragically at the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) pay-per-view *Over the Edge* in Kansas City, Missouri.
Owen Hart embodied his comic persona of the “Blue Blazer”, a masked superhero. He was to make a spectacular entrance by being lowered from the arena ceiling by a harness. Unfortunately, the descent system malfunctioned, and Owen fell from an estimated height of around 24 meters (78 feet), landing on a corner of the ring. The accident took place off-camera, but the public present witnessed the fall. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards, at the age of 34.
The event left a deep mark on the history of professional wrestling and raised many questions about safety in this type of show. His family filed a lawsuit against the WWF, which was settled out of court.
